History of Ohio Farmers Insurance

Ohio Farmers Insurance was initially known as Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance of Medina County. In 1848, Ohio legislature recognized the need to protect local farmers from fires caused by oil lamps and sparks emitted by grain threshers. Interested farmers pooled their assets and agreed to have them distributed in the event someone lost their crops. All monies were held by an insurance agent who processed claims as needed.

Ohio Farmers Auto Insurance Form

1851 marked the year that Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance became Ohio FarmersInsurance. It would be another 26 years before the company would focus its energies on clients outside of Ohio. In 1877 the first non-resident client was insured in the state of Indiana. Cheap auto insurance was added in 1912 after the company expanded their market to include the East coast.

The 60s marked a series of changes for the company. For almost 40 years Ohio Farmers experienced massive growth and a handful of name changes that included: Ohio Farmers Indemnity Company, Ohio Farmers Insurance Group and Westfield Companies. Ultimately the decision was made to completely consolidate Ohio Farmers into the Westfield Group in 2000.

Additional products under the Westfield Group include: Westfield Insurance, Westfield National Insurance Company, American Select Insurance Company and Old Guard Insurance Company. The name has changed, but customers receive the same comprehensive automotive coverage.
