History of Travelers Insurance
The present company was formed in a 2004 merger between The St. Paul Companies, Inc. — originally The St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Company — and Travelers Property Casualty Corporation.
Travelers was founded in Hartford, America’s insurance capital, in 1864. As its name implies, the company originally provided reimbursement for injury or death to the beneficiaries of train and steamboat travel. In fact, Travelers paid out more than one million dollars worth of claims to the beneficiaries of passengers who died when the Titanic sank.
The St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Company was founded in Minnesota in 1853 in response to the concerns of Midwestern farmers and businessmen who felt their claims weren’t being processed quickly enough by East Coast-based insurance consortiums. The company made its reputation in the wake of two of the nation’s biggest disasters, the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.
In the 1990s, Travelers acquired rival insurance company Aetna’s property and casualty insurance divisions before briefly becoming part of the mega-banking corporation Citigroup in 1998. Insurance and banking did not work well together under the same red umbrella however, and the insurance arm of Citigroup was spun off. Ironically, in 2009, when Travelers became a component of the Dow Jones Industrial Average under the ticker symbol TRV, it replaced one-time owner Citigroup.
After the merger that created present company, the new insurance giant was initially called St. Paul Travelers, but shed “St. Paul” as part of its corporate rebranding strategy when it repurchased the rights to its red umbrella logo in 2007, repositioning itself as The Travelers Companies.
Today Travelers is ranked at 99 on Fortune Magazine’s list of the 500 largest companies in the United States. It employs 30,000 workers nationwide and as of 2009, its valuation was approximately $110 billion.
